Mister Softee Space Twistee Vanilla Stout
Review Date 8/29/2025 By John Staradumsky
Remember Mister Softee? I sure do. As a kid visiting relatives in Philadelphia and New Jersey, I got ice cream from a Mister Softee truck. I seem to remember a round ice cream sandwich of considerable size. It had creamy vanilla ice cream wedged between two thick and rich chocolate wafers. It was very good indeed and I recall that day fondly.
Mister Softee’s website says they were established in 1956, and today their 650 trucks prowl the streets of 18 states. One of those states is Georgia, though I don’t recall ever seeing them here. Be that as it may, Mister Softee is now available in cans, thanks to a collaboration with Other Half Brewing. The pair launched four beers on August 8th of this year, and the first one I have seen is Space Twistee Vanilla Stout.
I think this is the first beer I have had from Other Half that is not an IPA. Imagine that. Other Half Mister Softee Space Twistee has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume and I paid $5.49 for my can from Half Time, which is not bad really as Other Half beers go.
Other Half Mister Softee Space Twistee pours to a dark brownish black (not opaque) color with a thick creamy tan head and a nose of roasted malts and a hint of vanilla. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body, smooth and chocolaty, but definitely thinner in body than I want in a stout. It has hints of fudge and chocolate chip cookies, and very light vanilla. Even at that, though, it’s more like a brown ale than a stout. I got some odd tropical fruit notes and toasted nuts. My can is marked 073125 on the bottom.
Here’s the thing, though. I am:
Not getting the ice cream theme.
Not getting enough vanilla.
Not getting a stout (too thin, more like a brown ale as I said).
It’s not a bad beer, it’s actually a tasty one, but it’s an expensive beer, and I’m not getting what it advertises.
All this said, I think I might buy it again, because it kind of reminds me of that ice cream sandwich as a kid. Still and all in all, you might want to stick to IPAs, Other Half.
Glad I tried it?

Would I rebuy it??
