Double Diamond Dry Stout

Double Diamond is back! Well, sort of. And, it actually never left, though I haven’t seen it in ages. For the moment, I’m talking about Double Diamond Original Burton Ale, a classic English pale ale brewed by Ind Coop since 1876. It’s still around today, though its distribution is in much reduced circumstances.

Such was not the case in the late 1980s to early 1990s. In those days, I was drinking it in bottles and on tap in Rhode Island. I have fond memories of playing pool at a local bar (it might have been The Station as I recall) and enjoying delicious draft Double Diamond with my brother, who also enjoyed it very much.

This, however, is not the Double Diamond I am here to speak of today. Instead, I am here to expound upon Double Diamond Dry Stout from the Oxbow Brewing Company of Newcastle, Maine. Enjoyed in my original Double Diamond glass, of course.

Oxbow says:

Double Diamond is a dry stout brewed with whole-leaf hops, English specialty malts & Maine-grown barley.

Oxbow Double Diamond Dry Stout has an alcohol content of 4.5% by volume and I paid $4.99 for my 12-ounce can from Half Time. This is the only pricing information that I have. My can was stamped CANNED 11/12/24 (I think), as the first number was extended over the can lip.

Oxbow Double Diamond Dry Stout pours to a jet-black color with a moderate sized head of creamy tan foam and a nose of deep dark roasted malts. Taking a sip, the beer is light to medium in body, and I might like a little more of that, but it simply bursts with luscious dark roast. There’s a hint of char and licorice and chocolate, too, and the whole affair ends bitter with (again) roasted malts and a kiss of herbal hops.

A delicious, drinkable dry stout that I think would go perfect come Saint Patrick’s Day.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
