Remember the Summer of Love? Yeah, neither do I. It was 1967, and I was 3 years old. I may be getting long in the tooth, but not that long. Anyway, somebody at Palisade Brewing of Palisade, Colorado must have thought of it when they decided to call their Porter of Love just that. Even the logo has a sixties-style hippie feel to it.
This is not just any porter, mind you, it’s an imperial porter of formidable strength. This is my first beer from Palisade, and I believe it is the 2015 release. Palisade beers are not sold in Georgia but I got a can from my buddy Dale Roberts. He’s not sold in Georgia either, but he sent me a can in 2016 and I sort of aged it for a year.
From the website:
This annually evolving imperial porter Is released the first week of November, or with the first freeze. The change from autumn to winter(ish) in the grand valley demands a chewy, warming beer, and POL never disappoints. Bold flavors of dark chocolate, cocoa nibs, toffee covered vanilla sticks and a hInt of coffee in this brew will build love from within.
Ingredients, also from the website:
NORTHWESTERN HOPS - 2 ROW MALTED WHEAT, CHOCOLATE, BLACK BARLEY, CARAMEL C77 AND C45 MALTS - BELGIAN CANDY SUGAR
Palisade Brewing Porter of Love has an alcohol content of 10.4% by volume with 55 IBUs.
Palisade Brewing Porter of Love pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy tan head and a wonderfully inviting dark chocolate and licorice nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a rich full mouthfeel, about 10W-40 I think, with waves and waves of bittersweet dark chocolate and licorice (like All Sorts candy). It’s not really coffeeish with a year’s age, but it is so smooth and easy to drink. The flavors are amazingly mild but still get your attention. The finish is bitter roasty with alcohol warmth. Just amazing, and amazingly smooth.
I don’t know about you, but I’m in love with the Porter of Love. A few sips and you might be too…..
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
