Here’s a new one for me: Pinkus Jubilate, described on the label as a “Special Reserve Dark Lager”. Pinkus Jubilate is an organic beer and is brewed by the Pinkus Muller Brauerei of Munster, Germany and imported by the famous Merchant du Vin of Tukwila Washington. If you go to the Merchant du Vin website, however, and click on the Pinkus Muller section, you won’t see Jubilate listed.
Jubilate itself is not a new beer and is in fact almost as old as I am. In a press release dated 2008, Merchant du Vin announces the introduction of the beer in the US market. They state that it was first brewed in Germany in 1966 in honor of the 150th birthday of the Pinkus Muller brewery. In style, the beer is a Munich Dunkels, or dark lager.
Organic beers have never really been my thing. Since most of beer is water, I’ve never been convinced that the organic growing of the barley, hops and in some cases wheat make much difference. If organic is important to you, however, you should know that Pinkus has been brewing organic since 1980 and that their beers are certified organic by the USDA.
Pinkus Jubilate Special Reserve Dark Lager has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume and I paid $3.99 for a half liter bottle.
Pinkus Jubilate Special Reserve Dark Lager pours to a dark brown color with a luscious nose that just explodes with notes of freshly milled, gently kilned dark nutty malt. Taking a sip, the beer has a smooth medium malty palate with notes of the fresh melanoidin-laden nutty grains the nose promised, subtle chocolate, molasses, and other decoction delights. For a Munich Dunkels this is intense, chewy and rich in its dark malty intensity, approaching a doppelbock in flavor profile (if not in body). One of the best Munich Dunkels I’ve ever tasted.
This is truly an amazing beer and a tribute to the brewing skill of the Germans. I could just sniff that wonderful maltiness here all night, but of course that would be a waste so I drank and enjoyed the beer. Why not pick up a bottle or two and see what I’m talking about? You’ll be glad you did.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
