Portland describes this beer as "smooth, mellow, and aromatic." I agree.
They also claim the beer "rich with subtle flavors" and has a "fine
eloquent finish." To some degree this is true, but I find ZigZag to be one
of the lightest bodied beers I've ever tasted from a microbrewery. The
beer is very light copper in color with slight carbonation and no real
head retention. It has a very delicate malt palate with a touch of DMS.
The hop finish is very light, just enough to balance and leave a faint
bitter sensation on the tongue. I enjoyed this beer as a crisp refresher,
and can imagine it being very welcome indeed on a hot day. I have to
wonder though, if Portland isn't aiming this beer at entry-level
craft-brew drinkers. It seems just one degree of intensity above a Bud or
Coors.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
