Although as a beer
enthusiast one tends to drink beers of many different colors, flavors, and
varieties, sometimes what works best is just a simple straightforward lager.
To be sure, lagers themselves come in a wide array of colors, flavors, and
varieties, but again sometimes the simpler of these may be what’s called for
at a particular moment, especially for, say, the first beer of the day or
night. But wait. I still want some flavor in that lager.
OK, I admit I’m being rather hard to please, but one can easily satisfy all
of the criteria I’ve set forth with a foaming glass of Pripps 1828
Premium Export Lager brewed and bottled in Goteborg, Sweden. This is an
exceptionally flavorful specialty lager that is both tasty and refreshing. A
perfect beer to sip on the patio after work or perhaps to accompany a
complex dinner, Pripps 1828 is up to almost any task one might ask of a
beer.
From the label:
1828 is brewered on four different malts. For starters, there’s the
traditional pilsner malt. Then we add a slightly roasted munich malt for
richer body, a darker caramel malt for that pleasant roasted taste and to
top it all, a sinfully dark black malt for that complex heavy roasted
flavour. The result is 1828- a premium lager beer with deep golden color and
rich aroma.
I was pretty impressed with this beer. The combination of malts used gives
it a luxuriant complexity and plenty of flavor, but at the same time the
brew remains highly drinkable. Part of this is due to the balancing
hoppiness, slightly floral and drying in the finish, it makes you start
wanting another sip as soon as you finish swallowing the last. The hops are
not overly intrusive, however, they still allow the malt to predominate.
Pripps 1828 Premium Export Lager pours to a deep golden brown color
with a light head formation and a crisp malty, slightly floral nose. The
palate is slightly crisp from the pilsner malt with a touch of chewy
caramel, light hints of prune and notes of dark chocolate. The slightly
grassy hop finish (Saaz and Hallertau varieties are used) lingers slightly
on the tongue and balances the malt nicely.
I could easily see myself drinking plenty of this beer. Packaged
appropriately in brown glass, it is sold in 11.2-ounce bottles for about
$1.99 each. Definitely a beer worth checking out.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
