Sticky Stout has stuck. Red Hare Sticky Stout Oatmeal Stout, that is, a new winter seasonal beer from the Red Hare Brewing Company of Marietta, Georgia. Or is it so new after all? Red Hare Sticky Stout began life as an entry in the Rabbit’s Reserve series of specialty beers before graduating to a regular rotation offering. Then it was draft only, and I first tried it on March 16th, 2014 at Taco Mac (where else) in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
I
described the beer at that time as “Delightful oatmeal stout, smooth and
silky, chocolaty, light hints of licorice. Yum!”. I loved it, and I still do
today (I’m always up for a good oatmeal stout after all). So I was pleased
as punch whe Red Hare announced they would be canning it. Here’s what they
say about the beer on the can:
Winter Schminter! Let it get cold! Just pack up plenty of this wonderful Oatmeal Stout for the season. We’ve got the perfect blend of oats, dark malts with a wee taste of chocolate and coffee. What you get is a stout that’s not too heavy, it’s just right! Enjoy it while it’s here, ‘cause it’ll be gone before the next ice storm hits…
Red Hare Sticky Stout has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume with 17 IBUs. I picked up a six-pack for $7.59 at target, a great deal indeed. I liked it well enough that I sent a few cans to friends to try, too.
Red Hare Sticky Stout pours to a dark black (but not quite opaque) color with a short lived creamy white head and a luscious nose of dark roasted malt and pasty oats. Taking a sip, the beer has some smooth silky oat notes up front with a medium body (and I think I’d like a bit more body, just saying) followed by some robust flavors of coffee, chocolate and licorice. The beer finishes roasty with some minty grassy hops and a light herbal bitterness. A very drinkable oatmeal stout in cans, I like this one very much but I do think if it had more body in the reserve series.
Still and all, Red Hare does say they are going for a mid-body stout, and the beer is delicious. Don’t be afraid to try it, if you can. That Red Hare is notoriously hard to catch.
Update 10/25/2018: Red Hare beers are featured beers of the month for October of 2018 at Taco Mac! I'm enjoying a favorite of mine tonight, Red Hare Sticky Stout. Wonderful roasty nose with a smooth silky palate and hints of coffee, chocolate, and licorice. A lot like I described it last time around. $6.13 for a 23-ounce mug with a free logo glass.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
