Reformation Pumpkin Spice Porter

Review Date 11/5/2019  By John Staradumsky

I brought home a growler from Reformation Brewery! They’re here in Canton, you see, so I didn’t have to go far. I saw they had Reformation Pumpkin Spice Porter on tap, so I headed down to get a fill. This beer is part of their Pioneer series, and is a variation on their wonderful Stark Porter (sans coconut). Stark is one of my favorite beers from Reformation.

Reformation says:

Pumpkin purée, vanilla, and pumpkin pie spices pair perfectly with the classic coffee and chocolate character of our toasted porter, Stark.

Reformation Pumpkin Spice Porter has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume. I paid $12 for a 64-ounce fill at the brewery, which is not bad at all ($3 a pint). When I filled it, I told the gal behind the bar (she seemed like a newb as my grandson might say) that it was a fine day to drink it on the patio.

“Oh no,” she replied, “That’s why we seal them with tape, you can’t drink this here.”

“My patio, at home” I replied. “I know how this works.”

She smiled, and I did too. I still gave her a good tip.

Reformation Pumpkin Spice Porter pours to a jet black color with a thick fluffy tan head and a soft roasty spicy nose. The spicing is subtle, but the gebtle clove and nutmeg I get accent the chocolate notes of the porter and the squashy, stringy, vegetal pumpkin nicely. The beer finishes dry with spice.

The spices come out more as the beer warms, and the pumpkin and chocolate develop, too. If I could offer one critique it is that I would like just a little more spice. Still, this is just a gourd-eous beer, and one I will drink again for sure.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
