Try? Re-buy?
On to Revelry! That was our battle cry. We had just passed a pleasant visit to Charleston’s Palmetto Brewing Company, and we then took a very short Lyft ride to our next stop: Revelry Brewing on Conroy Street. Revelry is in a bit of a different setting, in an old industrial building or perhaps former garage hidden in a neighborhood next to a park. When we arrived, we found it packed to the gills, with patrons spilling out of the front entrance and milling about the front of the place.
Oh, and they were on the roof! That is the interesting thing about Revelry, they have a roof bar. We saw people drinking and dining on roofs throughout Charleston, and it seems to be the in thing there. I won’t argue with that, so we head up the stairs. To the roof!
The roof bar offers draft beer and canned beer from Revelry, as does the bar on the first floor. It does not serve samplers, so I decided to order a pint, and thought that Revelry Funkmaster & The Furious Hops Belgian IPA was a good candidate. The beer weighs in at 7% alcohol by volume and I paid $7 for a glass. As I sipped, the adventure continued, as we got caught in a rain storm on the roof. Which was fun.
My glass of Funkmaster & The Furious Hops arrived a beautiful golden color with a big fluffy white head and soft funky yeast and citrus in the nose. I got firm caramel malt, grassy earthy hops and funk, and a gentle but lingering bitterness.
My first observation was I’d like more funk here. Although the beer is tasty, it didn’t strike me as particularly Belgian. My second observation was I’d like more hops. The finish seemed lackluster in the hops department. The $7 price tag doesn’t help, either. Total Wine sells 4 pint cans for $10.99.
Keeping it completely honest, this isn’t really a beer I would buy again. Three Taverns A Night in Brussels Belgian IPA is much more what I think of as a Belgian IPA, and I would likely go for one of those instead.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
