Samuel Adams American IPA

Review Date 11/12/2020   By John Staradumsky

Here’s another new (for me) anyway beer in the Samuel Adams 2020 Winter Classics 12-pack: Samuel Adams American IPA. I do get the sense I have seen this beer before, though I’ve never tried it. I got a few bottles when I picked up the Samuel Adams 2020 Winter Classics 12-pack, and while there is a listing for the sampler and descriptions for some of the beers on the Boston beer website, they don’t have anything to say about Samuel Adams American IPA.

I can tell you that you will get these beers in the sampler:

Samuel Adams Winter Lager

Samuel Adams Holiday White

Samuel Adams Boston Lager

Sam ‘76

Samuel Adams Holiday Porter

Samuel Adams American IPA

I can also tell you that the back of the label says this:

BOLDLY HOPPY

This American IPA has an intense juicy, citrus flavor with a lean body and crisp, clean finish. To brew our west coast style IPA, the brewers hand-

selected five American hop varieties and brewed for maximum hop expression, emphasizing hop flavor and aroma.

My bottle is notched as best before February of 2021.

Is this a new beer? It reminds me a lot of Samuel Adams Rebel IPA, which in its original formula had 5 hop varieties (as mentioned above), an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume (the same as American IPA) and 45 IBUs (the same as American IPA).

Hmmmm……

Anyway, I paid $15.19 for my Winter Classics sampler.

Samuel Adams American IPA pours to a bright orange color with a thick fluffy white head and a bright citrusy hop nose. Taking a sip, the beer has light caramel but vibrant hops. They are earthy herbal, leafy, citrusy grapefruity and lemon zesty, and gently resiny. The beer finishes very bitter indeed with grassy herbal notes and bitter grapefruit peel.

Quite delicious! This may (or may not) be Rebel IPA under a new name, but even if it is, hey, that’s OK. I loved Rebel IPA.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
