Samuel Adams Breakaway Blonde Ale

Review Date 2/20/2026 By John Staradumsky
Confession time: of the four Samuel Adams seasonal sampler 12-packs, the spring release is my least favorite. I don’t know why that is. Perhaps it is because the beers tend to be lackluster compared to the fall and winter releases. Even the summer pack is a little more robust. That’s not to say the beers in the spring back are bad, because they absolutely are not. It’s not to say that Samuel Adams does not release some real treats, either (I am currently looking everywhere for their new Cherry Bomb). They are just on the mild side. Let’s look at the 2026 Spring Favorites 12-pack in example. In it, you get 4 cans each of:
Plus, the beer I am here to review today, Samuel Adams Breakaway Blonde Ale. This is my first time having it. I did not buy the spring sampler, though I may still do that, but I did pick up a single of this at Total Wine recently.
Boston Beer says:
Malt-forward, golden, sweet, and soft blonde ale. Light cereal & biscuit notes team up with touches of tangerine to give Breakaway Blonde a balanced complexity. The light-body, clean, and quick finish will make the whole crowd cheer for more.
Ingredients from the website:
HOPS: Comet, Mosaic
MALTS: Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend and blonde roasted oats
Samuel Adams Breakaway Blonde Ale has an alcohol content of 4.7% by volume with 15 IBUs and I paid $2.29 for a single at Total Wine. It is sold in six-packs as well and those were going for $9.99 there at the time. The label on my bottle is notched as best before July.
Samuel Adams Breakaway Blonde Ale pours to a brilliant golden color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose bursting with fresh bready malt. Taking a sip the beer is medium in body, just what I expect for a blonde ale. It’s crisp and fresh bready and very delicious indeed. Finishes with a bit more than balancing herbal grassy hop bitterness.
I very much enjoyed the malty, quaffable character of this beer. I do think it is released a little early and is better suited to warming spring days over the still chilly winer ones we are still experiencing. Either way, it is certainly a beer I would drink, especially if I see it on tap at Taco Mac.
Glad I tried it?

Would I rebuy it??
