You really have to do your homework to find out about Schilling beers. Unlike many brewers, they don’t list their products on their website. Perhaps they feel they don’t need to because the beers are just so darned good you’re going to have to work at it to find out about them.

Far be it from me, then, to back down from a challenge, and a dedicated web search found some detail on the beer I’m here to expond on today, Schilling Karluv 13°, in a post on Schilling’s Instagram account.

We are proud to welcome the return of Karlův 13°, our Czech-Style Black Lager named for the renowned Charles Bridge in Prague. Karlův 13° features floor malted Moravian pilsner, Munich, and black malts from the historic Záhlinice malthouse in the Czech Republic. With roots back to 1899, the Záhlinice malting facility utilizes traditional floor malting techniques that combined with decoction mashing provides Karlův with a rich malt character.

Schilling Karluv 13° is a Cerné Pivo style beer, basically a Schwarzbier. It has an alcohol content of 5.3% by volume and I paid $6.49 for my can from Half Time. That is the only pricing information that I have. My can had smudged freshness dating on the bottom that I coul not make out.

Schilling Karluv 13° pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy tan head and a nose featuring soft malty chocolate chip cookie notes. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body and bursting with fresh dark toasty nutty notes. I get the fresh baked chocolate chip cookies the nose promised, and licorice, all leading into a clean dry roasty finish. Peter Rusek, who recommended this one to me, mentioned notes of pumpernickel, and he was right. I got spicy coffee, too.

Another winner from Schilling. Do they ever do anything by half measures? I think not.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
