Well today has been a crappy day all around, but you know what makes crappy days better? Beer! So here I am at my local Taco Mac with Southbound brewery, one of the featured Georgia craft brewers of the month for a tall cool mug of Shakedown Street Dry Hopped Tart Saison Ale. This is a kettle soured beauty of a beer that I very much enjoyed and started the night off on the right track.
Sours are all the rage these days, and this beer-a sour saison-has the added bonus of being dry hopped as well. This is a seasonal beer from Southbound, fast becoming one of my favorite Georgia brewers, and their website entry for the beer is dated March 29th of this year. You can find the beer in cans and on tap, which is of course how I enjoyed it.
From the website:
Something’s
shakin’ with Shakedown Street--Southbound’s fresh new take on a French
Saison. This light kettle soured Farmhouse Ale is infused with a hefty dose
of Southern Cross, lending this brew a heady aroma of citrus and pine. Take
some time to poke around, and you’ll discover complex layers of bitterness,
pepper and spice dominated by hops and an abundance of floral notes. Too
much too fast? Not at just over 5% ABV. So kick back and enjoy the ride.
Shakedown Street Dry Hopped Tart Saison Ale has 35 IBUs and I paid $6 for my 20-ounce draft at Taco Mac, and that with a free cool Southbound logo glass. The beer runs $10.49 a six-pack at Total Wine.
My mug of Shakedown Street Dry Hopped Tart Saison Ale arrived a beautiful crisp orange amber color with a half inch layer of creamy foam and a boisterous array of pine, citrus and spice in the nose. Taking a sip, I got a dry appetizing sourness at first, followed by black pepper, spice, yeasty funk, citric and lightly resiny hop notes and a pleasingly dry sour finish.
This was a very tasty beer indeed, and I enjoyed the complexity of the beer, augmented nicely by the subtle kiss of hop aroma. I’ve never seen it in cans, but you can bet that the next time I do, I’ll be bringing some of this one chez Bruguru. Why don’t you do the same?
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
