So, folks keep telling me, “Hey Bruguru!” they tell me, “Why do you go to that Taco Mac in Canton so much? Why don’t you do something different, you know?" Always one to take advice from others seriously, I did just that, and headed the 10 miles down I-575-to Taco Mac Woodstock. They had beers from two new breweries I was hankering to try, you see, one of them being Straight to Ale Lilly Flagg, a milk stout from Huntsville, Alabama.
Straight to Ale may seem like a strange name until you see their logo, and then you’ll get the pun. They are one of a very few craft brewers sending beer to Georgia currently, so I was happy to see them on tap and to support another small brewer by buying some of their beer and telling you about it.
From their website:
Lily Flagg Milk Stout is named for Huntsville’s most famous quadruped. A prize cow owned by local plantation owner Samuel B. Moore, Lily Flagg was honored as one of the world’s best butterfat producers in 1892 at an exposition in Chicago. This dark, rich beer contains tons of roasted malt goodness, hints of chocolate and coffee and a creamy mouth feel from the addition of milk sugars during the brewing process.
Pretty cool inspiration for a beer if you ask me. And obviously you did, since you’re reading this. There were actually two Straight to Ale beers on tap today, and I just got a sample of their Monkeynaught IPA on the side. Nothing like a beer with a side of beer, I always say.
Lily Flagg Milk Stout has an alcohol content of 5% by volume, just about right for the style, and 30 IBUs. I paid $6.25 for a full mug pour.
My mug of Straight to Ale Lilly Flagg arrived a beautiful jet black color with a truly wonderful nose of sweet dark malt laced with licorice. Taking a sip, I got a medium roasty body, chocolate, and lots of licorice. A slightly phenolic character is the only flaw, but only slightly and I really love the roasty dark flavors and creamy, milky sweetness on this one. It finishes roasty bitter, just enough to balance off the sweetness, and really hit the spot for me.
Would I buy it again? Damn straight-to ale-I would.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
