Unobtainium Old Ale Aged in Bourbon Barrels

Review Date 9/11/2025 By John Staradumsky

So I was going through my stash, and I found a bomber bottle of Straight to Ale Unobtainium Old Ale Aged in Bourbon Barrels. I’m not sure how old the bottle is (it had no freshness dating), but based on other beers I found with it, I estimate it is from 7 to 10 years old. It’s an old ale. I made it an older ale.

I had never had this beer before, so I hopped on over to the brewery website to see what was up with it:

Unobtainium is a bold, rich, complex Old Ale, aged in bourbon barrels for six months. This beer is sweet, powerful, and filled with bourbon character! Unobtainium is made with pale malts, black malts, crystal malts, and molasses. This limited release goes fast, so obtain some when you can!

I haven’t seen Straight to Ale beers here in Georgia for years now, and that’s a shame. I’ve enjoyed every one of them that I have tried.

Straight to Ale Unobtainium Old Ale Aged in Bourbon Barrels has an alcohol content of 10.1% by volume with 22 IBUs. I have no idea what I paid for my bomber.

Straight to Ale Unobtainium Old Ale Aged in Bourbon Barrels pours to a dark mahogany color with a thick creamy tan head and a nose of dark nutty malts, molasses and boozy bourbon. Taking a sip, the beer is full in body and glides luxuriously over the tongue. It offers notes of toasted nuts (pecans perhaps?), dark fruity raisin, sweet molasses, chocolate, spice cake, and in the finish boozy bourbon and alcohol warmth.

This one aged wonderfully, and it’s a hame I cannot obtain it anymore. But then again, you never really could.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
