Sweetwater 420 Strain Mango Kush

Review Date 2/5/2020  By John Staradumsky

Funny story. I was at Harrah’s Cherokee River Valley Casino, and I wanted a beer. I went to the bar and saw a sign for Sweetwater 420 Strain Mango Kush Wheat Ale-yay! This beer is the sequel to Sweetwater 420 Strain G13, a beer I very much enjoy. I hadn’t tried it yet, and at $5 for a pint (with tax no less!), it was a good deal, too! So I got one, and was about to head back out to the casino floor, but needed to go up to my room first.

As I’m getting in the elevator, an older-than-I (and seemingly more inebriated than I) lady is getting in, and three guys are getting out. The doors close, and she looks to me saying “I smell skunk, those guys were smoking pot”. Without skipping a beat, I replied “No ma’am, that’s my beer.” She looked at me incredulously, and I suppressed a semi-evil smile.

Sweetwater says on their website:

A second sticky hit from 420 Strain, an American Wheat packed with herbal, juicy mango notes and a distinctive dank nose. Strain specific terpenes and natural hemp-type flavors complement the hop and malt bill, delivering a euphoric ale with that fresh olfactory bonus rip.

Ingredients, also from the website:

Malt Bill: Pilsner, White Wheat, Flaked Wheat

Hops: Sultana, El Dorado

Sweetwater 420 Strain Mango Kush Wheat Ale has an alcohol content of 5% by volume with 30 IBUs. You can get it in bottles at Total Wine for $9.49 a six-pack; I saw it at Target for the same price.

My cup of Sweetwater 420 Strain Mango Kush Wheat Ale was a hazy orange amber in color with a tight white cap of foam and a nose is “dank” with herbal and skunky aromas. Taking a sip, the palate is medium, tart wheaty and tastes like pot smells with juicy mango fruit and a balancing hop bitterness.

I’ll confess I did not enjoy this quite as much as the original but enjoy it I did. Would I buy it again? Why I already did. On May 16 I ordered up a full 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac for $6.80 where I enjoyed it with a sausage platter of Georgia Pecan, Smoked and Kielbasa with Pimento beer cheese, crackers, spicy mustard, BBQ sauce, and serrano pepper slices. After all, it was high time I enjoyed this beer again.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
