Gose! I love a good Gose, don’t you? Problem is, most American craft brewers today feel the need to throw fruit in their Gose. Terrapin is no exception with their Good to Gose Brewed with Grapefruit Peel (they also make a Watermelon Gose). As we shall see, though, the grapefruit peel adds a very subtle bite of citrus and does not distract from the overall Gose experience.
Gose is a classic German style that was relegated to obscurity here in the United States until recently. I do not recall seeing the style here in the United States before I found a bottle of Leipziger Gose in Kennesaw, Georgia back in 2003. That. Of course, does not mean the style was not imported before that, it just means I had not seen it on store shelves in Georgia or Rhode Island and in any of my beery travels prior to then.
Terrapin says:
About the Beer: Tart, refreshing and a pleasure to drink, our “Good to Gose” takes you on a magical ride. Brewed with a pinch of Sea Salt, a touch of Coriander and a kiss of Grapefruit Peel, this beer will get you ready for the long journey ahead.
Ingredients from the website:
HOPS: Vanguard
MALTS: Pilsner, wheat, torrified wheat, acidulated
OTHER: Lactobacillus, Sea Salt, Coriander, Grapefruit Peel
Terrapin Good to Gose has an alcohol content of 4.5% by volume with 7 IBUs. I paid $6.12 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac and got a free glass. It’s a good deal in cans at $8.99 a 6-pack at Total Wine.
My mug of Terrapin Good to Gose arrived a murky straw color with a light head formation and an inviting tart nose. One gets a puckering tartness upon sipping with gentle notes of coriander spice. Citrus is subtle, and a light saltiness emerges in the tarty tart finish.
Well done, a credible Gose aside from the grapefruit peel but it is subtle and doesn’t distract though I can’t say it adds a lot. I love the sourness and the light saltiness. I would buy it again for sure, a great warm weather beer.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
