Imperial Hopsecutioner Double IPA

If you haven’t yet tried Terrapin Hopsecutioner India Pale Ale, you should. It’s one of my favorite Terrapin beers, is somewhat ubiquitous, and is a darned fine IPA in its own right. Then if you like that, I have another treat in store for you: Terrapin Imperial Hopsecutioner, a beer the brewery calls a killer double IPA.

Terrapin Imperial Hopsecutioner is not always available, and I will confess that I had never seen it offered before when I noticed it on the draft menu of my local Taco Mac. Of course I ordered it, or you wouldn’t be reading this right now. Terrapin says:

Imperial Hopsecutioner is back, packing double the firepower. This brew swings in with an unrivaled load of American hops, delivering a wickedly resinous, citrus – charged bite. With twice the malt and a finish that doesn’t back down, this one’s not here to play nice.

Ingredients from the website:

HOPS: Warrior, Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, Amarillo (Dry Hop Cascade)

MALTS: 2-Row, Crystal 24, Biscuit

Terrapin Imperial Hopsecutioner has an alcohol content of 9.8% by volume with 88 IBUs. I paid $8 for an 11-ounce glass at Taco Mac. Seems reasonable to me, especially with prices the way they are these days.

Terrapin Imperial Hopsecutioner Killer Double IPA pours a bright golden color with a light head of foam and a nose of grassy herbal, resiny hops. Taking a sip the beer is medium in body, hinting softly at caramel. The main star here are the earthy, grassy herbal hops. They permeate, they dominate, they are all powerful. The beer is resinous, too, as Terrapin implies, and it is truly massive in the finish with a long dry lingering bitterness.

I was very impressed with Imperial Hopsecutioner, and I will absolutely be looking for more of it.
