Try? Re-buy?
Say there, fellow beer lover, have you tried Terrapin’s Liquid Bliss Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter? If you haven’t, you’re missing out on a tasty and delicious treat. That beer first appeared on store shelves as entry 18 in Terrapin’s Side Project Series of specialty beers, and flew off shelves so quickly that I never got a bottle. It’s the only Side Project that I’ve missed. Luckily, Terrapin made it a regular offering so I didn’t really miss it after all.
As I said, if you haven’t tried Liquid Bliss you should, and while I’m thinking of it, be sure to try Terrapin Side Project 25: Liquid Lunch Peanut Butter and Jelly Porter, too. This tasty concoction really takes Liquid Bliss to the next level, and just started to show up on store shelves recently. Not so long ago, I got an e-mail from Terrapin announcing this beer would be released at the very end of June. Finding myself down in my old stomping grounds of Marietta and Kennesaw in early July, I found it at Mink’s Package Store on Delk Road (a few other stores had it too).
I’m thinking that Terrapin has upped production of these beers, because a few local shops still have bottles of the last Side Project (Turtleneck Gingerbread Winter Warmer) from last December. Whatever the reason, I’m glad I snagged a bottle. Here’s how Terrapin describes it on the label:
Cut off the crust and unwrap the flavor of this fruit-centric beer. Hand crafted using real raspberries, “Liquid Lunch” Peanut Butter and Jelly Porter combines all the elements of a familiar lunchtime snack.
Ingredients from the website:
Malts: 2-Row Pale, Cara Pilsner, Malted Wheat, Crystal 85, Crystal 120, Chocolate Malt, Chocolate Wheat, Black Malt
Hops: US Golding
Other: Raspberry Puree, Peanut Butter Essence
Terrapin Liquid Lunch Peanut Butter and Jelly Porter has an alcohol content of 7.7% by volume with 30 IBUS. I paid $7.99 for my bottle at Mink’s, which h is the best price I’ve got a Terrapin bomber for in a long time.
Terrapin Side Project 25 Liquid Lunch Peanut Butter and Jelly Porter pours to a dark black color with a thick creamy tan head and a nose that brings me back to grade school with bright sweet raspberry jelly notes and subtle nutty aromas as well. Taking a sip, the fruity raspberry notes are readily apparent again, but the peanut butter notes come on much stronger than they did in the nose. A decided chocolaty character is apparent too, and the beer finishes balanced with a gentle hop bitterness.
Thinking about what Terrapin is trying to do here, they’ve really hit the nail on the head with this one. You really do get the peanut butter and jelly impression, with the fruit and peanut butter notes balancing each other off (the bright fruity raspberry “jelly” notes might have a slight edge). But if you’re looking for what they’re advertising, a beer that tastes like a PBJ, you won’t be disappointed. Well done Terrapin! Now I just need a bag of Fritos, a Twinkie and a carton of cafeteria milk and my lunch will be complete.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
