In America, we tend to think of beers from Scotland as either Scotch Ale (Wee Heavy), or Scottish Ale. If we even think that far into it; many beer drinkers will call them all Scotch ale and call it a day. Really, though, there are historically several varieties of ascending alcoholic strength and body, and can be broken down by the shilling system. The shilling system originated with the prices of kegs of beer, and really was extended across all styles, although today would mainly apply to what we consider Scotch Ale and Scottish Ale.
What I consider to be the classic Scottish Ale, Belhaven, has an alcohol content of 3.9% by volume and would be considered to be a 70 Shilling Ale, or a Heavy. It is on the cusp of an 80 Shilling Ale, or Export, and stronger than a 60 Shilling, or Light. 90 Shilling Wee Heavy is strongest of all, usually over 6%.
Thirsty Dog Twisted Kilt Scottish Style Export Ale is the beer I’m here to talk about today. It’s not sold here in Georgia, though I did get a bottle from Dave Coulter in a trade. With an alcohol content of 4.5% by volume, this is indeed an 80 Shilling “Export”. It accents the malts and is low on bitterness with 13.5 IBUs.
From the label:
This Scottish Export Ale gets its unique flavor and aroma through a special time consuming, extra long and vigorous boil. The caramelization blends perfectly with the malty flavor of roasted barley and complementing hops. Raise a glass of this very drinkable ale to ANY occasion!
Thirsty Dog Twisted Kilt pours to a hazy amber color with a thick (and I mean thick) towering head of foam; my bottle was a gusher. The nose is soft with caramel malt and taking a sip, the palate delivers soft nutty toffee and treacle notes, though it’s a bit thin for a Scottish (not a Scotch) ale. It is drinkable and even soothing with its soft seductive malt. This is a solid Scottish ale and although I want more of the luxurious malt than I get, I would certainly buy this one again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
