Have you met Gumballhead the Cat yet? If not, you should. He’s a lucky dude indeed, and I can prove it. Not only does he have his own music album (by the band Cheer-Accident), but he’s also got his own accompanying comic book, too. Best of all, he has a beer named after him: Gumballhead Wheat Beer by the Three Floyds Brewing Company of Munster, Indiana.

When I first moved to Georgia from Rhode Island back in 2001, times were dark indeed, and it was illegal to sell beer here with an alcohol content higher than 6% by volume. Amongst the few bright spots I found were the beers of Three Floyd’s, most notably their delicious Robert the Bruce Scottish Ale. I haven’t seen Three Floyd’s here in many years, so thanks due to Dave Coulter for sending me some Gumballhead to try!

Here’s what the brewery says about this beer on the label:

An American wheat beer with a refreshing, crisp citrus finish. This delicious session beer is brewed with boatloads of Amarillo hops.

We do love our Amarillos friends, especially by the boatload. Three Floyd’s Gumballhead Wheat Beer has an alcohol content of 5.6% by volume with 35 IBUs. It’s a year round offering from Three Floyds as well.

Three Floyds Gumballhead Wheat Beer pours to a cloudy yellow color with a thick foamy head and a soft fruity nose of passion fruit and lemony zest. Taking a sip, the beer has solid crackery wheat up front that’s a bit more hearty than usual (that red wheat for you), is pleasantly fruity, and is still tart and refreshing at the last. The difference here is the hops, though, they are as the label suggests quite lemony but also earthy and grassy herbal as they dry the beer in the finish. Wheat beers are not known for a lingering bitterness but this one has one for sure my friends, and that is what makes it different.

The label for Gumballhead says “It’s not normal”, and that is certainly true: this is a very different kind of wheat beer. Quite delicious indeed, Three Floyds Gumballhead Wheat Beer would be a summer favorite (and likely one in spring and fall too) were it sold in my area. It was nice to visit with Three Floyd’s again, and I can only hope they will return to Atlanta in due course.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
