Have I told you that Three Taverns brewing of Decatur, Georgia is one of my favorite breweries? Three Taverns brewing of Decatur, Georgia is one of my favorite breweries. I drink their beer in bottles to be sure, but my preferred method is fresh on tap, be it at the bar or from a growler I brought home from Stouts here in Canton. My latest Three Taverns beer is Hoplicity Double IPA that I happened upon at Taco Mac.
Hoplicity Double IPA is draft only and not widely distributed. I can tell you it won an award, a silver medal actually in the best of show category at the 2015 Atlanta Strong Beer Fest. I wasn’t quite as impressed with it as we’ll soon see, but first some background from the brewery website.
Inspired by the Miles Davis classic Boplicity and the improvisational spirit of jazz, Hoplicity carefully crafts a steady backbeat of alpha acids and transitioning layers of resinous, citrus (SIC), and tropical hops into a rich textured ensemble. This is our hoppiest beer and promises to leave your palate stunned, erratic, and eager for more.
Three Taverns Hoplicity Double IPA has an alcohol content of 9% by volume with 85 IBUs. I paid $7.50 for an 11-ounce glass.
My glass of Three Taverns Hoplicity Double IPA arrived a bright ornage color with a thin fily head and a gentle passion fruit and melon nose. Taking a sip, I got light caramel malt up front followed by a lot more of those tropical fruits the nose promised and hints of light citrus and resin. The finish is long and very dry with a grassy hop bitterness and warming alcohol.
I found this beer to be good but not the best from Three Taverns. I’ll offer the disclaimer that I’m not a huge fan of these thin malty, tropical fruity IPAs and DIPAs. I can enjoy them in limited quantities, and I did enjoy this beer and might buy it again, if only it weren’t so darned expensive. At 68 cents an ounce it’s a bit more than I would pay again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
