Wow! Not so long ago I opined on the can of Tree House Alter Ego IPA I got from my new buddy Andy John. That beer was wonderful indeed, a fine New England IPA from the land where New England IPAs were born (New England). If that wasn’t good enough, though, Tree House makes a big brother to Alter Ego called Doppelganger Double India Pale Ale, and this one was even more incredible. Maybe twice as much!
This may well be the first “double” New England IPA I’ve come across (I’ll have to check). It’s certainly super effusive in it’s dynamic juicy citrus flavors. You could easily get used to beers like this (but try not to, it’s rare and hard to get, only sold at the brewery).
Tree House says on the can label:
We are exited that you are holding Tree House Brewing Company’s big brother to Alter Ego, Doppelganger! It builds upon Alter Ego with an amplified kettle and dry hop, resulting in a hugely tropical beer with notes of papaya, mango, and peach. It is the result of our uncompromising dedication to fresh, progressive, and delightful beer. We hope you enjoy it with laughter, good cheer, and in the company of those you love.
My can says the beer has an alcohol content of 8.2% by volume and was canned on 06/05/15. It also says THE BIZZARO JERRY. I drank it on 8/26/2018.
Tree House Doppelganger Double India Pale Ale pours to a hazy orange color with a thick fluffy head and an explosive juicy citrus orange nose. Taking a sip the beer is smooth malty up front but explodes with orange and grapefruit juicy citrus and lesser hints of the mango and papaya. To me it was more citrusy and less tropical than the description implies, but to be sure, the tropical notes are there. It finishes minty and bitter and just way too easy to drink to be as strong as it is.
This is really an amazing beer, so juicy and so drinkable that I could easily have downed another can or two. At 8% alcohol by volume that’s not advisable, but if you have them, why not? Just don’t be driving. That’s all.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
