I picked up a bottle of Victory Black Forest Cake Stout with Cherry the other day. This is release number 7 in their Blackboard Series of specialty beers. The last Blackboard beer I had was release 5, a cream ale with cold brew coffee. It did not particularly impress. All the same, I had high hopes for the Black Forest Cake Stout. Who doesn’t love Black Forest Cake?
Happily, I was not disappointed.
Victory says:
Sweet meets savory in our Black Forest Cake Stout with Cherry. Roasted Malt balances out lush cherry flavor and ends with a bittersweet finish.
Ingredients from the website:
Malt: Pilsner, Chocolate, Pale Chocolate, Dark Caramel
Hops: Cascade
Victory Black Forest Cake Stout with Cherry has an alcohol content of 7.5% by volume and runs $10.99 a six-pack here in Georgia. That’s an improvement over the $13.99 a six-pack the coffee cream ale was commanding.
Victory Black Forest Cake Stout with Cherry pours to a jet-black color with a thin creamy tan head and a luscious cherry chocolate nose. Taking a sip, the beer is full in body with rich dark chocolate and lighter notes of bright tart cherry. It’s a little smooth and creamy (perhaps the whipped cream atop) and I am very much getting the black forest cake here. It even tastes a little cakey in the body in a texture kind of way. The beer finishes a little roasty chocolatey, too, like those bits of dark bittersweet chocolate on top. Licorice seems incongruous but its here.
Very nicely done Victory! Victory Black Forest Cake Stout with Cherry definitely calls forth the theme confectionary on the palate. I hope this is not a one-off, because I would certainly buy it again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
