Von Trapp! Von Trapp! I was having a double Von Trapp night! Two Von Trapp collab beers at that, the first of which was Von Trapp Barriehaus North German Style Pilsner. The collaboration brewery here, Barriehaus Beer Company, is located in Tampa, Florida, and like Von Trapp is lager-centric. Florida is a lot closer to me than Barriehaus, but I have not seen any of their beer here in Georgia yet.
I had high hopes for this beer, and I was not disappointed; this crisp refreshing Pilsner was the perfect foil to the hot weather we have been having. As it turned out, the second Von Trapp collab I would enjoy was also a Pilsner, that one with the Jack's Abby Brewery of Massachusetts. Both were excellent, but I enjoyed the Barrriehaus partnership Pils just a tad more.
Von Trapp Barriehaus North German Style Pilsner has an alcohol content of 5% by volume and my can was stamped BEST BY 10/11/26.
About Von Trapp Brewing
In a sea of Vermont craft IPAs, Johannes von Trapp found himself craving the light, refreshing brews he enjoyed while visiting the European countryside- beers 'you can have at lunch but won't need a nap after.' So, in 2010, Johannes, the youngest child of Maria and Captain von Trapp, brought his dream to fruition, gathered a group of the finest local brewers, and began von Trapp Brewing in the basement of the von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort bakery, the Kaffeehaus. Since then, the brewery has grown immensely, moving into a state-of-the-art, 30,000-square-foot brewery featuring a Rolec Brew House with the capacity to brew up to 36,000 barrels of beer annually.
Tasting Notes
Von Trapp Barriehaus North German Style Pilsner pours to a brilliant golden color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose of fresh crisp biscuity malt and herbal grassy hops. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body, apropos to the style. The malt is crisp biscuity and fresh bready and forms the perfect stage for the hops to play on. They are big and beautiful in their earthy herbal grassy intensity, gently lemon citrusy, and deposit a long, dry lingering bitterness at the finish that last for days and days.
Value & Verdict
I paid $5.49 for my pint can from Half Time Beverage, which is the only pricing information that I have.
A truly worthy effort beautiful in both its malt and hop components. I would absolutely drink it again, and if you will excuse me, I must be off now. I need to hunt down some Barriehaus beer.
