Wernesgruner Dark

I’ve always said, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to drink great beer. These days, saving money is more important than ever, what with grocery prices rising every time you make a shopping trip. You may find yourself visiting discount stores like Aldi and Lidl more often to pinch pennies where possible.
For my part, I’ve always loved Aldi and Lidl, partly for their bargain store brand products, but mostly because they are German owned and offer lots of imported German specialties its hard to find anywhere else. That includes beer, and I am fond of picking up Perlenbacher Pils (at Lidl) and Wernesgrüner Pils (at Aldi).
Now, Aldi offers a new addition to the Wernesgrüner family: Wernesgrüner Dark. I saw this beer on Untappd not so long ago and have been hitting my local Aldi regularly in hopes of finding it. This past Saturday, they finally had it in stock.
Aldi says on their website:
Wernesgruner German Dark Lager is a rich, full-bodied beer with a 4.9% ABV. Perfect for pairing with hearty meals or enjoying on its own, this beer offers a deep, malty flavor. Add Wernesgruner German Dark Lager to your cart for an authentic taste of tradition.
Wernesgrüner Dark has an alcohol content of 4.9% by volume and I paid $6.99 for four half liter cans at Aldi. They call this a black lager on the label, though it is not really a Schwarzbier in color or character. It’s more a Munich Dunkel. My cans are stamped 08.28.2026 on the bottom.
Wernesgrüner Dark pours to a chestnut brown color with a medium sized head of spritzy foam and a toasty nutty malt nose. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body to perhaps a little less. I get light chocolate chip cookie and toasty nutty malt notes then a dry grassy bitter finish.
I have had more robust examples of Dunkel, and would give this one 3.5 out of 5 on its own merits. Factor in the bargain price though and I will round it up to 4. The next time you are at Aldo, why not pick some up? Tell them the Brew Guru sent you.
Glad I tried it?

Would I rebuy it??
