Here’s my first beer from the Wibby Brewery of Longmont, Colorado: Wibby Double Dunkel. Like all (or at least most) Wibby beers, this is a lager. I just love to see breweries specialize in lagers. Most don’t, you see, because lagers are more expensive to make and take more time, too. The cold conditioning requires refrigeration and more time in the tanks, which means fewer batches can be truned around with the same equipment.
Still and all, some breweries like Wibby specialize in lagers, and that helps them stand out. Wibby beers are not sold in Georgia, but I got a can of this beer from good old Dale Roberts. Thanks Dale!
Wibby speaks here a little about themselves, from their website:
At Wibby Brewing we start with traditional German lager brewing principles and add the American craft twist. Our craft lagers are brewed with German malt, American hops and Rocky Mountain water. Cold fermentation and enhanced conditioning allow for our lagers to be full-flavored with a crisp finish. The tasteful result is a collection of unique American lagers that few breweries in the craft beer community have chosen to explore.
Wibby Double Dunkel has an alcohol content of 7.5% by volume with 31 IBUs. The beer is made with chocolate and vanilla. These would not be acceptable in Germany, but Longmont is in Colorado, not Germany.
Wibby Double Dunkel pours to a dark brownish color with a thick creamy tan head and a soft cookie malt and vanilla nose. Taking a sip, the beer has delightful sweet soft chocolate chip cookie notes underlined with smooth spicy vanilla and punctuated with a delightfully balancing grassy bitter finish.
What a beauty folks! Wibby Double Dunkel is full bodied with a nutty malty bases and hints of chocolate and vanilla. The flavors marry well, here, too. I’m already a Wibby fan after just one beer. You should be, too.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
