Julius Echter Hefeweissbier Dunkel

Hey there beer lovers! I would like to introduce you to a friend of mine. His name is Julius Echter, and boy can he brew up a mean wheat beer. Wheat beers, as we all know, are the official beers of summer, or at least they should be in my book. Crisp and refreshing, tart and quenching, it just doesn’t get any better than a tall glass of cool wheat beer on a hot summer day.

For as long as I can remember drinking beer, Julius Echter Hefe-Weissbier has been a frequent visitor to my refrigerator. Brewed in Wurzburg, Franconia, Germany by the Wurzburger Brewery (makers of a crisp, hoppy pilsner and a wonderfully malty Christmas beer among others), Julius Echter beers originate from perhaps the motherland of wheat beers, Bavaria. Wurzburger beers have been highly regarded for more than 350 years now, so you can rest assured you’ll be getting a beer of excellent pedigree with every bottle of Julius Echter you buy.

Three different wheat beers are bottled under the Julius Echter label: Hefe-Weissbier, the traditional Bavarian style Hefeweizen; Kristallweizen, a filtered version of the latter; and the beer under consideration today, Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel, similar to the Hefe-Weissbier but made with a portion of dark malts for a unique and richer flavor.

Though I have been drinking Julius Echter Hefe-Weissbier for a long, long time, I had never seen the dark version available here in the United States until recently when I picked up a bottle at Sherlock’s in Kennesaw, Georgia. Julius Echter beers seem to have wide distribution; I saw them all over New England, they’re here in Georgia and I recall seeing them sold in other states too.

Julius Echter Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel pours to a cloudy russet color with an imposing, towering cauliflower head and a slightly sweet and smoky malt nose. The palate is immediately sweet and malty with suggestions of cookie dough, clove, banana, juicy-fruit gum, and crackery wheat notes. The finish is very tart and refreshing, perhaps a tad sour.

Don’t let the dark color of Julius Echter Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel fool you: this is a wonderfully drinkable beer. I enjoy sipping it on the patio as I pass the evening, but it can also be enjoyed with pork dishes or oriental cuisine.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
