Von Trapp Trösten Smoked Dark Lager
Review Date 1/11/2025 By John Staradumsky
Those wonderful folks at Von Trapp Brewing of Stowe, Vermont, sure do love their Rauchbiers. Have I mentioned I love Rauchbiers? I do! Rauchbier, or smoked beer, is one of my favorite styles, and so far I have enjoyed three delightful Rauchbiers from Von Trapp: the legendary Maple Rauch from their Stowe Style series, a delightful Smoked Helles, and the beer I am here to speak of today, Von Trapp Trösten Smoked Lager.
Von Trapp says:
Trösten, translating to “comforting,” is a dark lager with rich notes of chestnut and toast. Carafa and smoked malts create rich flavors lingering on a surprisingly light, smooth finish. This lager is brewed for the cold winter nights in Vermont, but can be enjoyed on any occasion.
Now, I didn’t enjoy this beer on a cold winter night in Vermont, but I did drink it on a cold winter evening in Georgia, watching the last New England patriots game of the season. It was a perfect pairing.
Von Trapp Trösten Smoked Lager has an alcohol content of 6% by volume with 19 IBUs. I paid $2.99 for a single can, which I think a very good price. Total Wine sells it for $11.49 a six-pack at their West Orange, New Jersey location. My can was stamped BEST BY 03/16/25
Von Trapp Trösten Smoked Lager pours to a dark mahogany color with a thick and fluffy, creamy tan head and a nose of dark cookie malts and hickory smoke. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body and full with rich cookie malts. Dark chocolate and toasted nuts abound, all underlined by a slightly more than subtle smokiness. The smoke does not overpower the dark malts but complements very nicely indeed, and does intensify just a bit in the roasty bitter finish.
Very excellent indeed.
Glad I tried it?
